If your hair needs some reviving, you may be pondering over which products will be best to use to help repair it. The fact of the matter is that there are only a very few products available for sale that actually manage to repair hair that has been damaged. The only living part of their hair is within the hair follicle so, unfortunately, your hair isn't able to magically regenerate itself.
The majority of the hair repair products that are available today tend to act by coating the hair to protect it or disguise the damage in some other way. This is no bad thing, but you do need to be aware that many of the ingredients involved are truly not much different than those found in an ordinary conditioner. So the question is, what are the better hair products that are out there to use on damaged hair?
In the case of split ends, there is in fact a relatively new technology out there to help tackle them. Bear in mind that fix is going to be only a temporary one - the only permanent solution involves getting the scissors out. Good results however have been obtained by the use of a polyelectrolyte complex or as it is more easily referred to, a PEC.
Within the complex exist negatively and positively charged ions that not only stick to each other but also stick to the hair. They are able to attach themselves to various molecules within the hair locking themselves into different areas that are damaged. The split ends are then fused together and held in place when they are blow dried until the next time they are washed. Although this is not the ultimate solution, it's a really impressive one.
So, split ends aside, what else should your top hair repair treatments contain?
Moisture
Hair which is damaged and left straw like truly needs a lot of conditioning liquids to help replace moisture that has been lost, as well as smooth the outer surface. On the list of ingredients, look out for humectants like glycerine and pathenol that attract moisture and bind it to the hair.
Sealants and silicones
Ingredients such as silicones protect the hair and coat it, repelling moisture and acting as a barrier. This can prevent the hair from losing any additional moisture, though regular washings can be needed to prevent any unwanted product build-up.
Because it penetrates deep into the hair's core, coconut oil also works well to prevent damage.
Protein
A number of different products available on the market do include protein as one of the ingredients, but the question is can protein really repair hair? Although there are various claims that protein within hair repair products can act to basically fuse with the protein within your hair, patching it up, there's not a lot of evidence that protein can structurally repair your hair. It's more likely that it's able to temporarily coat your hair, sealing and protecting it from damage.
So although there aren't any miracle cures, the good news is that there are a variety of products available today that contain just the right ingredients to at least repair the appearance hair that is damaged and dry.
