Formatting e-books is one of the most important parts of the process of authorship in this day and age. With so many book sales, retailers and publishers now moving to the electronic formats, it's only a short matter of time before it will be impossible to have a successful book launch without including the various e-book stores in the process.
The three online book marketplaces you're most likely to know are Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks and Barnes and Noble Nook. The most successful marketplace through which you will distribute will depend on your authorial style, your genre, your audience, your pricing and other factors. It's impossible to know just which marketplace will be most effective for your book, so it's probably best if you sell through all three.
If you choose to approach each marketplace on its own without using a conversion service, read on.
For Apple iBooks, they have their own tool called iBooks Author. The problem with iBooks Author is that it offers very little in terms of native formatting ability, for example it doesn't give you the opportunity to completely choose your own design and formatting options. In addition, iBooks Author often creates problems and errors when converting from other file types, just like the Amazon Kindle conversion software has the tendency to do.
Finally there is the Barnes and Noble Nook, which runs on the EPUB format just like Amazon Kindle does. In other words, any formatting tool that you use for creating your Kindle e-book can also be used for Barnes and Noble. Most such tools will also allow you to upload your finished e-book to Apple iBooks, giving you the full control in how your book is sold. E-books are the wave of the future, and if you don't take the initiative to make your book into an electronic version, you can not rely on being as successful as you would otherwise be.
