Hydroponics gardening is a technique wherein plants can be grown without soil. Today, it is used by farmers as an efficient way to mass-produce crops. But the commercial production of crops isn’t the only use of this innovation. Hydroponics may also be used in scientific study, a solution to famine in third world countries, and even home gardening.
In hydroponics, plant roots are immersed in nutrient-filled water to promote growth. Studies have shown that plants don’t need soil to grow. Soil may contain nutrients that can help plants grow but its primary purpose is to hold water long to be absorbed. Soil is only necessary in some plants with roots that need to ‘hold on’ to something. By infusing nutrients into water and replacing soil’s function for root attachment with inert mediums like perlite or coconut husk, it was discovered that plants can still grow. In fact, most terrestrial plants can be grown through hydroponics gardening these days.
Hydroponics results in successful yields – more crops can be harvested with it than with traditional farming. The technique also reduces the money and effort it takes to grow crops, from labor to plowing all the way to use of fertilizers. Because hydroponics gardening drastically reduces production costs, it’s no wonder why they are used for the commercial production of crops in the farming industry. The return of profit in hydroponics is much greater than any traditional farming method.
Besides mass production of crops in the farming industry, hydroponics gardening is also used in scientific study. In fact, the plant-growing technique has long been studied for NASA before it was made known to the masses. The National Aeronautics And Space Administration continues to study it as a viable method for crop production in space stations and colonies which may be established in other planets sometime in the distant future. Scientists living in Antarctic Circle scientific stations also study hydroponics as a means to supplement their diets since crops can’t be grown in their environment’s conditions.
Hydroponics gardening is also seen as a solution for famine in third world countries. Because in addition to being economical choices and a highly productive way of growing crops, the technique also decreases rate of crop devastation as a result of hurricanes, floods, and pests which are common in these places. Homeowners can take advantage of this plant-growing method as well. Urban dwellers can use it to grow terrestrial plants even if they were living in a soil free environment.
