Buying a boat and living your life on it is one of the best ways to enjoy life. We’re not talking about living aboard. We are talking about spending lots of leisure time on a boat. The rewards of sailing and cruising are numerous and are hard to describe unless you’ve live them yourself.  Even though a boat can hardly be considered an investment, when you buy one to enjoy life more and fulfill dreams you are investing in life. Buying a boat should not be considered a liability. While it’s an obvious expense, life is meant to be enjoyed… And enjoyed aboard is even better!

You cannot live in fear of spending a little money. Plus, if you buy the right boat, a car becomes a lot more of a liability or expense than a boat. Yes, many older boats, if they are well taken care of, will depreciate a lot less than a car will. Do your research. You’ll soon find that many used boats don’t depreciate as much. A $5,000 16-foot outboard boat can likely sell for just about the same amount of money a year later. Apart from engine-hours, there is no odometer as there is in a car. Plus, in so many boats, the hour meter doesn’t even work! And potential buyers don’t even care! That’s the beauty of it. If the boat is cheap and works well, that’s all that you need to worry about.

Owning a boat can cost quite a bit in maintenance, but that is really only a concern if you are going in way over your head. Buy a boat that’s beyond your means and you are asking for headaches and trouble. Buy a boat that you can REALLY afford and the rewards can be amazing. Too many times we see aspiring sailors buying a boat they can’t afford just to please themselves and impress friends. That just ends up causing problems. However, if that same person buys the right boat, he’ll enjoy it for many years to come without ever worrying about the cost.

Always thing smaller… Meaning, when it comes to boats, a common misconception is that bigger is better. However, we’ve oftentimes experience the opposite – small boats deliver the biggest fun. When you buy a boat to invest in your life’s enjoyment, you don’t want to have to worry about it costing too much.  You don’t want to have to worry about needing a bigger, more expensive truck to tow it with. You just want to go out, tow it with a small truck, launch it and go enjoy yourself. That’s it!
