My Favorite Pattern for Kitchens

Usually, most kitchen design is not fun. It’s not like a lot of the other rooms in your home where you can just slap up some wallpaper. Instead, you really have to pay a lot of attention to your electrical needs as well as your plumbing needs. There are a lot of possible upgrades that can set you back a bit, and would be difficult to do after you've prettied up the room. It's a pain, but you can't ignore leaky or rusty pipes. This usually is a problem for older anodized steel pipes, but in some cases copper pipe replacement may even be in order.

You also have to pay attention to the weight of your appliances and make sure that your structure can handle them. It’s probably one of the rooms that you really need some professional help with other than the bathroom; just because so much plumbing is involved in the space. This also really drives up the price because you are probably always shocked at what plumbers charge per hour. However, just think of all the money that you’re saving on by not having them constantly coming in to tear out your walls to fix things that may have occurred if you use cheaper materials.

So when you finally have all of that done, you may be really overwhelmed with your kitchen design. However, this is where the fun part starts. Right now we’re seeing a lot of hand-painted cabinets. Usually this is just something in living rooms and on accent tables or console tables. However, it can be a fun way just to try a cheap trend in your kitchen. It’s very popular right now to have a different kitchen island than your main cabinets. This is also essential if you’re adding it in after the cabinets were put in. This may be a more modern update that you want for functionality. It may be difficult to match the exact finish of your cabinets, especially if they are a few years old so it’s a smart choice.

Instead, you can go with more of the country look that is going to use coordinating styles, but in totally different palettes. If you don’t think you can do hand-painting on your island then just try a really simple pattern for more of a rustic look. This could be a smaller harlequin print. However, if you want an easier project then just try three large diamonds on the back of your island. Then just glaze the whole piece for more of the hand painted effect.

This also adds interest to neutral colors such as if you were just using a taupe and white together. In fact, another option would just be to use two tones of gray or just the same paint color and in two different finishes. Traditionally we see this tone on tone effect a lot in stripes, but the harlequin print really changes that up while still being classic. Pattern is really where the personality and the fun part of your kitchen design comes into the room.
