Before you begin becoming a paralegal and jump on your path to success, there are many intangibles you must possess to amaze people, gain more clients, earn a high annual income, and become the best at your profession. These traits are hidden from most but hopefully you will find these traits to be able to help you achieve your highest potential. Some basic traits are the usual knowledge, commitment, and determination but those only get you so far. Here are the five characteristics you must have to excel as a paralegal.
Integrity - This first trait is the most important. Integrity is held highly in the field of law and the judicial system. Integrity is defined as the possession of firm principles. It’s the way you hold yourself and the principles and morals you stand by as you approach a client. Your integrity should never change and always be consistent. Integrity is something that can be found in the way you study and learn the trade of being a paralegal. If your morals are strict or vice versa, then you must stand by those and hold them throughout your career to build a concrete and unique style of integrity that only you hold.
Intelligence - This next trait alludes to the common man and should automatically apply to you in your profession as a paralegal. Intelligence is necessary to excel in this field. No one wants a paralegal that knows nothing and is oblivious to common sense. So you must study constantly and be willing to search other areas that are not always evident. Intelligence comes from within and if you want to continue to learn more and add more weapons to your arsenal, then smarts and intelligence and the desire to become more intuitive is necessary.
Good Work Ethic - This trait makes the job of a paralegal become more enjoyable. A good work ethic gives you the upper hand versus your opponent or the presentation at hand. A good work ethic puts you in the best position to be prepared and to understand the opportunities that could approach during a case or presentation. A good work ethic allows you to practice and put more hours into your trade, which in essence improves your game and allows you to become quite successful. This characteristic may also be a great deciding factor for your paralegal salary in 2011.
Patience - As they say, “patience is a virtue,” and with this profession it truly is. Patience becomes necessary to understand and relate to your client. You must have patience to keep your cool under stressful times and wait until it is your time to express your needs as well as the needs of your client. This virtuous trait becomes important because it displays your integrity and how you approach certain situations.
Compassion - The last trait is compassion. Compassion allows you to view your client in eyes that not everyone else sees them, and allows you to sympathize in what they are going through and feeling. This trait is the essence of a paralegal because it begins with the desire to help another, which you should show with all your clients. A compassionate person comprehends and acknowledges the needs of others. With this compassionate heart and view of your clients, you will be able to see their point of view and go further with assisting them.
Conclusion
With the acquisition of these above traits, you can become more than just a paralegal, but become one of the most caring and successful legal assistants out there. Not only do these traits affect your ability, but they also will help to provide you with a much higher income as a result. This should encourage you to think about obtaining these characteristics while becoming a paralegal in today’s legal field.
