Many product managers will use a product roadmap example as the initial template for their own documents. However you need to factor them into your process quite carefully. In this post I'll show you a standard process for generating product ideas, researching markets and incorporating examples into your own roadmap design.
Product managers often start out by bringing together as many ideas as possible. This includes product ideas for new feature requests, ideas for your strategic business plan, new technologies, features identified in competitors products, etc. It is essential to have as broad a range of ideas as possible especially in the early stages so that innovative new concepts can be included.
The manager should organize/categorize these ideas based on their target market. This facilitates defining products for each market and then subsequently researching the potential of each market segment. Potential can be based on the number of customers in each market, penetration rates, return on investment and the number of competitors already in this market. The real goal of doing such market research is to filter out undesirable markets and leave you with one or two key markets to target.
It is now a good time to start incorporating any product roadmap example ideas. This especially means different components, features or technologies that are commonly included in other examples. You should focus on short-term goals for one or two of your product lines. Make sure that your own identify product ideas are included where possible.
The entire product roadmap should then be reviewed internally by work colleagues, peers and management. You will no doubt receive feedback which should be reviewed and factored into a change log for your product roadmap. Over the course of time, all product roadmaps have to be refactored as the company goes through this cycle of ideation and market research once again to establish new opportunities.
