Don't try drilling tempered glass. The toughness and brittle qualities of ordinary glass leads it to crack and break easy. There is a type of glass that will just shatter if you try to do anything like cutting a hole in it. Great care is needed working with tools on glass. Use gloves, eye protectors or better still a face mask, to keep yourself safe. For cutting holes in glass you will have to use the toughest cutters which is the diamond tipped glass drill bit.

If what you want to cut a hole into an object which is not totally flat you will find the job more difficult. A bottle will be more a challenge than to drill into a flat pane of glass. Complete support of the object is essential to be able to do the cutting job. Especially when you first start drilling, drill very slowly. You will crack the glass more easily if you use a fast drill speed causing it to get hotter, also you are likely to wear out the diamond drill bit.

So that you don't crack your substrate, the glass, the drill speed should be about 2500rpm or slower when you start the drilling. For the smaller holes a rounded end or a core bit that is the required size will be best. It is Ok to speed up the drill a bit after you have got the cutting properly started. The larger the glass drill bit is the slower you should be drilling. Keep an eye on the colour of the drill bit. When it becomes hotter there will be some discolouration of the tool.

Cool the area that is getting hot due to the friction caused by the drill. Build a small dam with some modelling clay or plasticine around the drilling point. Fill the reservoir created with some water . Or get a tray with a small amount of water in it so that you can lay the item in it. Be Aware ! There is danger when electricity and water are in close proximity. So that you don't electrocute yourself you should take extra care for safety.

Getting the object in to a water filled tray and having the object under water for proper cooling is a great idea. Just make sure though that when the dill goes through the piece you don't end up with a hole in the tray too. Cooling something that is held vertically is not going to be so easy. In that case you might get a helper to have a small plastic bottle of water to drip, dribble or spray carefully on the tip of the glass tile drill bit as it is drilling.

What I have found to be the best way to get a hole started is to put some tape on the class so that the drill doesn’t skate around before taking hold. Failing that then you could get a plywood template to drill though that is thick enough to keep the glass cutting drill bit in place. The same rules apply when drilling into tile or stone. Something else to be aware of - A hammer dill is not a good idea when working with glass.
