As with practically any type of merchandise we buy these days, whether it be home decorations, motorbikes, or any type of vehicle, safety concerns for percale sheets and other bedding items are not exempted. When you consider that about a third of our lives are spent in these sheets, blankets, duvets, and comforters, it pays to know if these items will be safe to use during the eight or so hours that you’re in bed.
One of the big concerns to watch for when buying bed sheets of any type which includes percale sheets is the use of formaldehyde which is woven into the fabric. This is a chemical typically found in polyester or polyester blend fabrics. This may include fabrics that read “easy care” and “no iron.” There is no law that requires the manufacturer to state that formaldehyde or any other chemicals were used in the the manufacturing of the sheets. Instead, the aforementioned descriptions such as “no iron” and “easy care” can pretty much tell you that chemicals have been used in treating the fabric.
The presence of formaldehyde doesn’t mean that the use of a particular fabric is deadly or poisonous. Even if you have bedding items that have this chemical, you’ve used them for year, but have never had any negative reactions, there should be no major concern. This would be more of a concern for those who suffer from allergies, asthma attacks, and prolonged eye and skin irritation. For those who suffer from these ailments and symptoms, it would be best to buy sheets that do not have formaldehyde. These days, manufacturers have been more careful about not using chemicals on the bedding fabrics. With that in mind, it’s probably not as convenient to just wash the fabric and not have to iron. Even if you have bought bed sheets that require ironing since they haven’t been chemically treated, the long term health benefits you gain might be worth it.
The type of bedding that is not treated with chemicals tends to be cotton knits or flannel sheets. With these sheets, you can be reasonably sure that they’re safe to use because they have never been treated with chemicals. If you are a consumer who has used the “easy care” type of fabric in anything that you’ve used, it’s still best to be informed what type of fabric are likely to have formaldehyde and other chemicals. It helps, for example, if you are giving a gift to someone who has asthma or suffers from allergies. Being informed about the manufacturing of fabrics means that you’ll make the right choice when giving a gift either to someone you know, or even to yourself.
