Losing data on flash drives due to formatting or deletion can be a major setback if you do not keep backups. However, when it comes to data recovery flash memory is just as easy to analyze with recovery software to get your documents back. This article looks at how flash data recovery is possible.
One of the key advantages of flash memory is that it uses the FAT32 file format for administering files. This is the same one that is used by Windows for your internal hard drives, so each partition will have its own master boot record and file allocation table (FAT).
In terms of data recovery flash drives can therefore use the same data recovery software that are used on internal hard drives. There are dozens of data recovery freeware options too – with new ones entering the market all the time.
These applications all work by using the FAT32 files to search for documents on your flash drive that are simply not appearing in the directory structure. The reason this is possible is that deleting files or formatting a USB flash drive of its contents does not completely remove files from memory.
Each file you save gets stored as an index entry in the FAT along with the actual data being stored to memory as data clusters. Deletion/formatting only alters the index in the FAT (effectively clearing the directory attribute so your file no longer appears in Windows Explorer) but leaves the data clusters untouched. Therefore data recovery software can simply scan the memory for data clusters to piece back together, as well as read the FAT to identify files with no directory setting.
As with all data recovery, there provisos to this is that extended use of the flash device will gradually overwrite old data clusters as deletion/formatting flags these memory sectors as available should they be needed for newly saved files.
