I have a buddy that works as a mechanic at a auto repair shop. He told me a story recently of how a car battery blew up in his face. Basically, a coworker wanted to recharge a battery with a recharger, but he put the setting on a jump starter setting instead of trickle charge.
So on a lot of car battery rechargers, there are different setting. This recharger in particular is industrial grade made for auto repair shops. This one has 4 settings. It has 6 volt low, 6 volt high, 12 volt low and 12 volt high.
Each setting brings a different level of charge. Each level takes longer or shorter time to charge. This mechanic in particular was running out of time and so he set it on 12 volt high. That is a setting meant to jump start your car.
The problem was that the battery was on really low charge. When a battery is severely low on charge, you can't try to charge it on high like that. You have to trickle charge it slowly on a low setting like 6 volt. It takes a lot longer, but much safer. Plus it won't burn your house down.
So as this battery was charging on 12 volt high, the chemical reactions caused the battery to explode in my friends face. When a battery explodes, it spreads acid everywhere. It can be very dangerous. On top of that, my friend did not have his goggles on. He usually wears them, but he didn't have them on at this time.
The battery really needed to be replaced and not tried to be recharged. Even if you are trying to recharge a battery that is not holding the charge, you really need to replace it. In any case, my friend is fine, but he'll certainly be wearing his safety glasses from now on.
