Different drinks require different types of drinking glasses, and it’s important that you know each type especially if you like entertaining guests often. Instead of searching each type of drinking glasses one by one, we compiled a short guide to each.

BEER MUG

This is your traditional mug which is made of thick glass with a handle on the side. Typically holds up to 16oz of liquid.

BRANDY SNIFTER

This glass has a deep bottom and a short stem which makes it just enough for you to warm the brandy while its odor flows to the top. Can hold up to 17.5oz of brandy.

CHAMPAGNE FLUTE

This is a tulip- shaped glass which is designed to show the bubbles off the wine. A typical sized champagne flute can hold up to 6oz of drink.

COCKTAIL GLASS

Also known as martini glasses, this type has a triangle- shaped bowl and a long stem. It can be used for several drinks including martini, cocktails and metropolitans.

CORDIAL GLASS

Some people like to have a small drink after a meal, and a cordial glass is often used for such drinks. These glasses are small in size, which are perfect for serving small portions of liquors. A typical cordial glass can hold up to 2oz of liquor.

HURRICAN GLASSES

These are glasses which have a shape like a tornado, and are usually used for exotic and tropical drinks.

PARFAIT GLASSES

This has an inward curve similar to that of a hurricane glass except that it has a larger bowl. This is usually used for drinks containing ice cream or ice.

RED WINE GLASS

These are commonly made of a round bowl with a clean, thin stem and are usually used for red wine and typically holds up to 8oz of wine.

SHOT GLASSSES

These are really small glasses made for one “shot” or gulp of drink. This is used for vodka, whiskey, tequila and other liquors. This glass can only hold 1.5oz of drink.
